Conference Information

Thinking about going back to Shanghai again after a successful World Planning Schools Congress in 2001 in Shanghai? Considering your first experience of urban planning in China and wanting to attend the Shanghai World EXPO? You have been waiting for the right time. After almost ten years, Shanghai has been transformed. So has planning research and practice in China. Shanghai will host the world EXPO from May 1st to Oct 31st 2010. This mega-event is expected to have 200 participating cities and countries from around the world showing what they are doing to improve cities and sustainable urban development and 70 million visitors.

China’s evolving urban and regional policies and new thinking about sustainable development have attracted worldwide attention. Following successful international conferences on China’s Urban Development and Planning in 2007, 2008, and 2009, the fourth annual IACP conference will be held at Tongji University in Shanghai, China. This conference will bring together researchers, planners and other government officials from China and around the world to exchange ideas around the theme “Better Cities, Better Life.”

The event is supported by Tongji University, the Urban Planning Society of China, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Tongji University, the local host, has the top-ranked urban planning program in China and is a globally recognized leader in urban planning education. It successfully organized and hosted the first World Planning Congress in 2001. Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC) is the national organization for professional planners, researchers and planning officials. It publishes two predominant planning journals in China: City Planning Review (published monthly in Chinese) and China City Planning Review (published quarterly in English). Shanghai is the biggest megacity in China. It has more skyscrapers than New York City.

The IACP conference organizing committee is calling for paper abstracts that are related, but not limited to the topics below. Some travel scholarships are available to help current IACP members, particularly student members, defray portions of their travel costs, lodging and registration.
