Xiaoguang Wang – IACP Faculty Highlights

Xiaoguang WangAssociate Professor Xiaoguang Wang, Environmental and land use concentration, Department of Geography, Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI

Xiaoguang Wang (王晓光) is an Associate Professor of Geography Department at the Central Michigan University. She received her B.S. (2003) from Peking University and her MS (2005) and Ph.D. (2009) from urban and regional planning at the University of Michigan. She then began as an Assistant Professor of Geography at the Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant. She was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2015. She is a lead faculty in the environmental and land use planning concentration in the department.  She is an affiliated faculty at the Center for Geographic Information Science at CMU.

Xiaoguang’s research focuses on the interconnections between the built environment, driving behavior, travel safety, and environmental outcomes such as fuel consumption and emissions. She is interested in the applications of fine-grained spatial-temporal data and spatial statistical techniques in the field of urban planning specializing in transportation and land use.  Her earlier works focused on using naturalistic driving data to study the relationships between the built environment and driving outcomes. Her study demonstrated the importance of the built environment along commuting routes, especially for non-work travel. Using a similar dataset in Michigan, she also examined influence of the street environments on fuel efficiency. Her research highlighted the values of naturalistic driving data with precise spatial and temporal information in urban planning and transportation studies. She later developed methods to combine spatial statistical tools with location data to explore the influence of the built environment on vehicle crashes. Dr. Wang has published in journals across disciplines, especially in urban planning and geography.

In parallel to her research in the U.S., Prof. Wang’s most recent work focused on land ownership and land urbanization in Shenzhen and job-housing balance in Beijing. She is currently finishing her sabbatical as a visiting scholar at Beijing University.

Dr. Wang has been an active member of IACP since 2007. She has been serving on the review board of IACP for six years.
