Research direction and social contribution)

Dr. Nie is interested in the institutional and social forces in urban and community development, with a particular focus on the interdisciplinary intersections between healthcare policies, health and wellbeing, and urban governance, with a geographical interest spanning China, North America, and Southeast Asia. A core facet of his research explores how healthcare policies and economic pursuits intersect and empower entrepreneurial healthcare actors in urban development and what are the economic and social impacts. Through critical theoretical and empirical investigations, his research demonstrates the dynamic interactions between business entities, hospitals, and universities shaped by healthcare and market policies, and the roles of medical institutions in regional development. In addition, his inquiries extend into equitable opportunities in community development across different socioeconomic contexts, including the governance and empowerment of urban communities, power dynamics in community development, and community well-being. An important component of his current work is launching social experiments in partnership with community members and assessing their impacts on community well-being, particularly for the elderly. His work has been published in high-impact journals such as Urban Studies, Regional Studies, Urban Geography, and Cities. With a background in architecture, one of Dr. Nie’s career goals is to integrate design practice into his research inquiries.
