Hongwei Dong – IACP Faculty Highlights

Hongwei DongIntroduction

Dr. Hongwei Dong is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and City & Regional Planning at California State University, Fresno. He holds a Bachelor’s degree with double majors in Urban Planning and Law (2001) as well as a Master degree in Regional Economics (2004) from Wuhan University. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Urban Studies from the Portland State University in 2010.

Research Area

Dr. Dong’s research lies at the intersection of three areas: 1) integrated land use and transportation, particularly the impacts of rail transit and zoning on property value and land development in rail transit station areas; 2) housing and real estate development, particularly how land use regulations and development forms influence housing affordability and equity; and 3) healthy and happy cities, particularly how neighborhood physical and social environments affect residents’ mental wellbeing and happiness. The results of his studies appear in top-notch peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of the American Planning Association, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Urban Studies, Urban Geography, Housing Policy Debate, Journal of Urban Design, International Journal of Sustainable Transportation, Transportation Research Record, City Planning Review (in Chinese), and Urban Planning International (in Chinese). His manuscript on the roles of land use regulations and urban form in the 2008 housing recession won him a manuscript award by the American Real Estate Society (housing category). He was a short-term consultant for the World Bank (Beijing office) for providing expert advice in TOD design of High-Speed Rail Stations in China.

Dr. Dong has been an active IACP member in the past few years. He is now assisting IACP to organize a seminar on urban Resiliency and sustainability at the Northeastern University (China) in summer 2017.
