Conference Theme: “Urban Innovations in the New Planning Context”
The reform of China’s national spatial planning system, a top-to-bottom overhaul of the nation’s planning practice, is an important part of China’s systematic, holistic and structural reforms. The integration of functional zoning, land use planning, and urban and rural planning into the new “territorial spatial planning” merges various types of local urban plans into a single master plan and improves the nation’s comprehensive spatial management system. The reform requires that we understand plan formulation and planning education in a new context and study the impacts of the new spatial planning system on planning theory, method and practice.
The new planning context opens up multi-dimensional innovation opportunities for interdisciplinary research, inter-regional planning coordination, and the fusion of technologies. Urban innovation is becoming increasingly critical to planning within the context of recent developments in the field, such as the interdisciplinary collaboration between spatial planning and natural resource management, the development of mega-regions such as the Great Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, and the application of big data, cloud-computation, artificial intelligence, and spatial algorithm to urban science.
Aiming at promoting urban innovation and international intellectual dialogue, the annual conference provides a platform to discuss the new territorial spatial planning system and the development of urban and rural planning disciplines in this new context.
We cordially invite scholars, planners, engineers, and government officials from China and around the world to join us to share new planning ideas and experiences and explore the opportunities and challenges at this critical juncture for spatial planning in China.
